DoctormomND began as a way for Dr. Samantha Zahavi ND to share tips & tricks related to kids’ health based on her combined journey through Naturopathic Medicine and Motherhood. As a parent, she understands the many questions and concerns that might arise on a daily basis with respect to children’s health, development and overall wellness. Children are unique in that they generally respond well to small changes in diet or lifestyle. Their health, development and microbiome may also be affected by their complex interactions with the environment around them.

Colic, Gas & Reflux

It is often hard to distinguish between colic, gas and reflux in a baby. Through discussion, presentation of symptoms or physical exam, your ND can help you identify the cause of these concerns and curate a plan specific to your child. Combined appointments for mother and baby are often recommended in these cases, especially for breastfeeding mothers.

Eczema & Skin

Eczema and skin complaints appear to be external in nature, but they’re often a part of a larger picture within. Finding the root cause is highly important for lasting improvement. There are many safe and natural topical options that improve skin health as well. Some options may be made at home and others will require the help of a compounding pharmacy.

There are many ways to support your child’s wellness journey. Supporting them holistically might mean improving their ability to handle stress, improving mood, cognition or focus, improving sleep, optimizing nutrition, correcting nutrient deficiencies, and so on. Every system in the body is connected, thus improvement or decline in one area may affect many other areas of health downstream.

Food introduction is an exciting time, however, it may often come with fears, confusion or overwhelm. Support can include education around when and what to start with, allergy prevention, nutritional requirements at various stages and the best foods to boost brain development, immunity, gut health and overall wellness. Gut health in babies and children is very important to their overall health. Over 70% of our immune system lies within the gut and core nutrients are absorbed there as well. Chronic complaints such as constipation, straining, withholding stool, diarrhea, mucus, blood, undigested foods, pain, extreme bloating, gas or foul odours should be looked at more closely.
